How to use Overworld Maps without Android Auto

You don't need a car screen to use Overworld Maps. The phone app has the same three worlds and full turn-by-turn directions, down to a ride on a bike with the phone in a mount.

Install it

Either copy works on the phone. The APK needs no sign-up:

  1. Download the APK from the latest release on GitHub.
  2. Open it, and allow installs from your browser or files app when Android asks. It needs Android 10 or newer.
  3. Open Overworld Maps and allow location.

The APK uses free stand-in fonts and icons in place of the games' own. Accident and road-work alerts need a traffic key the APK doesn't carry, so those appear only in the Play copy. For the Play copy, see the tester setup guide.

Find your way around

The layout follows a familiar maps app and the look follows the game. Search sits at the top, with Home, Work and Saved under it. Tap a place to get a sheet with Directions and Save, then a route preview, then Start.

  • Layers switches the world and turns the map's details on and off.
  • Settings is the game's pause menu, in four groups: map, driving, places and about.
  • Tap a shop, temple or petrol pump on the map and the camera flies to it.
  • Tilt with two fingers. Tap locate twice and the map turns with the phone.

Search that understands Indian addresses

Search reads place names in the usual spellings, plus codes like F5QR+3F New Delhi and typed coordinates. You can also share a place into Overworld from your maps app, which helps with a house or a small shop that only one app lists.

Keep it running with the phone locked

A trip keeps guiding with the screen off, through a navigation notification you can see and stop at any time. Some phones, Samsung's among them, freeze apps in the background. If the map stops while the phone is locked, open Settings, then Phone locked, and let the app run unrestricted.

Try it without going anywhere

Turn on Test drive in Settings to run a simulated trip from your sofa. It's the quickest way to see each world moving.
