Overworld Maps

Tester setup: Play testing and the APK

There are two ways to install Overworld Maps while it is in testing. If you want it in your car, use Google Play. If you only want it on your phone, either works.

Google Play testing

This is the copy for the car, with the full look and all live traffic data.

  1. Email your Gmail address to gaurav@thealgothrim.com. You'll get the Play testing link back.
  2. Open the link on your phone with the same Google account, and accept.
  3. Install Overworld Maps from the Play Store. The first time, Play can take a few minutes to recognise you; if it says the app isn't found, try again shortly.

Updates arrive as ordinary Play Store updates. While the store listing is in review, the Play page can show the package name, a plain icon and no rating. That's normal for a testing build.

The APK

  1. Download Overworld-Maps-*.apk from the latest release on GitHub.
  2. Open it and allow installs from your browser or files app when asked (Android 10 or newer).

The APK has free stand-in fonts and icons, and no accident or road-work alerts. For a new version, download the new APK and open it. Whether it appears in a real car depends on the phone and Android Auto version, so use Google Play for the car.

Switching between them

The two copies are signed differently, so Android won't update one with the other. Uninstall one before you install the other. Uninstalling deletes your saved places and marked cameras, because they live only on your phone.

Reporting a problem

Email gaurav@thealgothrim.com or open an issue on GitHub. The useful details:

  • Your phone, Android version and which copy you installed.
  • Your car or head unit, and whether Android Auto is wired or wireless.
  • Which world you were in and what happened.
  • A screenshot or a short video, if it's safe to take one. Never film while driving.
